Summer Mode To School Mode

There is usually a great deal of angst around this time of year. Parents and students realize that the start of school is right around the corner and begin to question whether they are truly prepared. Middle and high school students are checking their school websites to figure out summer assignments, while parents of elementary-aged children anticipate the laundry list of supplies they need to purchase for the classroom.

With all of this in mind, it’s important to take some time to game-plan and develop a strategy for the start of school.

First, parents should make sure they can access their child’s Student Information System (SIS), such as Aspen, PowerSchool, or Skyward, to see whether class schedules have been finalized. If there are questions or concerns with your child’s schedule and/or teacher assignment, it’s important to reach out to the school as soon as possible. Keep in mind, however, that schools are likely receiving a high volume of phone calls right now, so a little patience may be necessary.

It’s also never too late to get a child’s brain “activated” for school. In my opinion, there is no better substitute for this than independent reading. For middle and high school students who have yet to finish their assigned summer reading, this part is easy. But for those who have already completed their assignments, find something of interest and pick up a book. Reading for pleasure is a great way to get the mind back into learning mode.

And finally, it’s time to get back to a routine. One of the best things about summer is that it is often unscheduled, allowing for later bedtimes and slower mornings. But as the first day of school approaches, it’s time to get back into the habit of early to bed and early to rise.

A little preparation now can make the transition back to school much smoother—and help both parents and students start the year feeling organized, confident, and ready to learn.
